Mike Cannata was born in Saint Charles, Illinois. He attended Elgin Community College in Elgin, Illinois. During this time, he was focusing on academics and working in the ceramic and sculpture department, where he made clay and glazes.  After this time, he started attending The New York State School of Ceramics at Alfred University where he is currently a senior anticipating graduating. While in school Mike took classes in print, video, glass blowing, oil painting, ceramic sculpture, glass casting, glaze chemistry and metal casting. He gained experience with the Adobe Suite Programs, many print processes, Shar mixers, Muller mixers, setting programs for glass and ceramics kilns, running ceramic gas kilns, sand casting for metal, ceramic shell casting, rubber mold making, and making multi-layer plater molds. He had his first show in Chicago Illinois at Marfo Gallery, while attending Alfred University he has been exhibited in a number of Showings within NYSSC. Over the last summer he attended a two-week Ceramic workshop at Haystack Mountain school in Maine.
